About Bhutan

The Land of Gross National Happiness. Bhutan is indeed the Last Shangri-La.

What Bhutan can offer today is what others don’t have at all. Bhutan is virtually a very unique destination and is priceless. Money cannot buy what Bhutan has got to offer. If you are seeking Five Star Comforts, Shopping Paradise, Dazzling Nightlife, so on and so forth, Bhutan is not the destination for you. But, on the other hand, in this 21st century, if you are looking for a destination where you can experience something of the past as well as something of present, then Bhutan is the place to be. Perhaps, Bhutan is the last bastion of Mahayana Buddhism in the Himalayas.

The Kingdom is spread over 46,500 square kilometres with varied climatic conditions ranging from the sub-tropical in the south to the cold reaches of almost 25,000 feet snow-capped mountains in the north.

With a population of around 0.7 million, it is thinly populated and is a paradise in its real sense. Bhutan is known for its unspoilt ancient cultures and traditions. For Bhutan, past is still the present, and its religion is still a way of life. Kingdom of Bhutan opened its doors to tourists only in 1974 under a careful regulated programme. Until 1991, there was only one Travel Company and it was operated by the Royal Government of Bhutan.

Bhutan is one of the last areas still pristine in all its nature, where nature and people live in harmony. Untainted flora, un-hunted fauna, rare botanical plants, the colourful birds and the scenic beauty offers a great treat for both young and old. Festivals with mask dances depicting its great cultural past and Himalayan Ranges in the background definitely deserves a visit. Highest unclimbed mountain in the world, Gangkar Puensum (7,570-M) is also located in Bhutan. Besides Bhutan, Assam, Sikkim and Darjeeling are popular destinations located in the same Himalayan Belt. Bhutan is great for the adventurous and a treat for the sore eyes.
